MSME (Udyam) registration
MSME registration, now called Udyam registration, is a free government registration for micro, small and medium enterprises on the Udyam portal of the Ministry of MSME. The Udyam certificate is what banks, buyers and government departments ask for when you claim MSME benefits such as collateral-free loans, protection against delayed payments and tender relaxations. ISPEED collects your details, files the application and sends you the certificate.

What it is
Udyam registration replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar memorandum from 1 July 2020. It is based on Aadhaar, PAN and GST data, so most figures are pulled from government records rather than typed in. There is no government fee, and one registration covers all the activities of the enterprise.
Your category depends on both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover. The limits were revised with effect from 1 April 2025.
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to Rs. 2.5 crore | Up to Rs. 10 crore |
| Small | Up to Rs. 25 crore | Up to Rs. 100 crore |
| Medium | Up to Rs. 125 crore | Up to Rs. 500 crore |

Questions
Is Udyam registration free?
Yes. There is no government fee on the Udyam portal. ISPEED charges only a professional fee for collecting your details, filing and checking the certificate.
Is GST registration needed for Udyam?
Only if your business is liable to register under GST. Businesses below the GST threshold or otherwise exempt can register with PAN alone.
Can a trader register as an MSME?
Yes. Wholesale and retail traders have been allowed to register on Udyam since July 2021, mainly to access priority sector lending. Some scheme benefits remain limited to manufacturing and service enterprises.
Does the certificate need renewal?
No. It has no expiry. The portal updates investment and turnover from your income tax and GST returns each year, and your category may change as the business grows.
What if a buyer does not pay on time?
A buyer must pay a registered micro or small enterprise within the agreed period, which cannot exceed 45 days from acceptance of goods or services. On delay, compound interest is payable at three times the bank rate, and you can file a claim on the MSME Samadhaan portal.
Can I have more than one Udyam registration?
No. One enterprise gets one Udyam registration number. Additional activities and units are added under the same number.
